I’ll be okay, Indira said as she shivered again, but her gray eyes were determined when they met mine. Let’s just get moving.

I nodded my agreement, and we continued past the reef into deeper, darker waters.

And all the while, we followed a faintly-glowing ribbon only I could see.

The brightly-colored fish we’d seen near the beach were long gone, and we had to avoid a few other curious creatures that swam along the ocean floor around us. Even a few sharks passed overhead, but they seemed unconcerned with our presence below them.

It reminded me of the time I’d gone to the aquarium when I was a kid, and we’d walked through a glass tunnel underneath the water filled with various sea creatures. We’d seen turtles and sharks graze over the surface of the tunnel, and the entire group oohed and ahhed at the sight, but it was much scarier when the sharks could drop down and tear you to shreds at any moment.

My friends and I tried to hurry without drawing more attention to ourselves, but it was slow moving under the water either way. We hopped over stingrays, climbed and swam over more underwater caverns, and continued east by northeast until we reached a drop-off.

The water seemed to go on forever below us, and the bottom of the ocean floor was no longer visible under the blackness of the water.

But the glowing line continued down, and I knew I needed to follow it.

I don’t know, man, Auden mumbled. Do you think it’s down there?

Only one way to find out, I said with a shrug before I stepped off the edge.

I floated down about twenty yards before I hit the ground again, and it surprised me it was so close when it had looked bottomless from above.

Kane! Charlotte shouted in my head. Are you okay?

I’m fine! I replied. It’s not that far. Come on!

Soon enough, the trio floated toward me and landed next to me in a cloud of silt. The water was so dark, the silt was hardly visible, but Indira and I could still see with our feras’ night vision abilities.

Indira had taught me how to use certain aspects of my fera’s power with partial shifting, and the lessons had already come in handy several times since we’d entered the water since neither of our animal forms would do well under the sea.

A snowy owl and a white tiger just didn’t mesh well with the creatures of the ocean.

I took Charlotte’s hand and motioned for Auden to stay close, and then Indira and I led them deeper into the ocean. The temperature had dropped again, and I could feel Charlotte’s hand as she shivered and shook with the cold. I thought about offering for them to stay behind again, but Indira had been adamant about going further even when she was freezing. I didn’t want to make them think I didn’t want them to go with me, but I was worried about them, too.

Having such tough girlfriends was hard. Maybe I should have asked the Premier for a warming charm of some sort, if that even existed.
